Rivera Leads Hatters to Victory at NJIT

Angel Rivera scored six of his 12 points in the final 4:33, including the game-winning basket with 8.7 seconds to play as Stetson held off NJIT for an 84-80 win in ASUN Conference play, Saturday at the Wellness Events center in Newark, N.J.

Stetson (11-17, 3-8) led by as many as 18 points in the first half and led 68-49 with 10:15 to play before NJIT (12-14, 5-6) closed to within 76-75 with 3:01 left. But Rivera rescued the Hatters time and time again down the stretch.

With the Highlanders on an 8-0 run, Rivera hit a floater in the lane to make it 72-62 with 7:18 to play. NJIT closed to within 72-69 and Rivera countered by working a screen-and-roll to perfection with Abayomi Iyiola to give the Hatters a 74-69 edge.

A Rivera jumper with 4:33 to go made it a 76-71 Stetson lead, and another layup with 55 seconds left put the Hatters ahead 82-77. A three-pointer by NJIT's Zach Cooks made it 82-80, setting the stage for Rivera's game winner.

Stetson led 47-37 at halftime after ambushing NJIT early on. The Hatters made 12 of their first 16 shots from the field and at one point led 41-23 with 5:51 left in the half.

Rivera finished 5 of 8 from the field with a three-pointer and added 7 assists and 4 rebounds. B.J. Glasford and Luke Doyle ach scored 17 points to lead the Hatters, while Iyiola and Divine Myles added 12. Iyiola also grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds.

Cooks led the Highlanders with a game-high 21 points.

Stetson closes out the regular season with the first of three straight home games when they host Lipscomb, 7 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 15 at Edmunds Center.

Quoting Coach Williams
"We came out with some energy today. It's about energy. When you can build some energy up, you gain more belief in yourself and that's what we did. Angel Rivera made some big plays. He stepped up big time. Good for him. We are blessed to have him as a part of our team. Now we have three home games to close out the year. How do we want to finish up? Let's finish up the right way and find a way to win all three of these games and get a good seed for the conference tournament."
