Hatters Down NJIT

Stetson women's tennis picked up a 5-2 win over ASUN Conference foe NJIT on Saturday in Newark, N.J.

The Hatters won their second straight conference match to improve to 10-6 overall and 2-1 in league play. NJIT is now 8-8 and 1-2.

Stetson rallied for the victory, winning five of six singles matches after dropping the doubles point as NJIT earned doubles victories at Nos. 2 & 3.

Freshman Danel Ashirova clinched the win for Stetson, rallying for a 5-7, 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 2 singles.

"It was a big team effort today," said head coach Travis Sandlant. "Under some tough conditions we turned it around from a 4-3 loss last year. It was great to see Danel pull out the clinch today to build her and the teams' confidence."

Arijana Korac picked up a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 1, while Lucie Renault earned a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 3. Vicky Geurinckx was victorious at No. 4 by scores of 2-6, 6-2, 6-0, and Brooke Milner capped the singles spree with a 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 (10-6) win at No. 5.

The Hatters return to the court when they host Kennesaw State, 10 a.m., April 5 at Mandy Stoll Tennis Center.
