Hatters Reach ASUN Tourney Finals in Thrilling Fashion

William Shkrob's three-set victory at No. 6 singles helped propel No. 2 seed Stetson to a thrilling 4-3 win over No. 3 seed FGCU in the ASUN Conference Men's Tennis Tournament semifinals, Saturday at the UNF Tennis Complex in Jacksonville.

The Hatters (18-3) now advance to Sunday's ASUN Championship match where they will face regular-season champion and No. 1 seed North Florida at 9 a.m. The match will be carried live on ESPN+.

"Both teams played a great college tennis today," Stetson head coach Christophe Noblet. "Everyone wanted it badly, and it came down to the last court. Hats off to Will for pushing himself, believing in his shots, keeping his composure, and giving us that final point. We are looking forward to an exciting match tomorrow, where UNF is clearly the favorite. But we will assuredly give it everything we've got, and let's see who comes out on top."

Shkrob's heroics helped Stetson reach the ASUN Championship final for the first time since 2011. The Hatters will be seeking their first ASUN title.

Stetson may have ultimately won the match but the Hatters had to rally after losing the doubles point. Down 1-0 as singles play began, Stetson traded victories with the Eagles (9-12).

Angus Bradshaw knotted the match for the Hatters with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 4, but FGCU got a straight set victory at No. 5 to take a 2-1 lead.

After FGCU won at No. 3 for a 3-1 lead, the top of Stetson's lineup came through as Malik Bhatnagar at No. 1 and Loic Blanco at No.2 each won second set tiebreakers to knot the match at 3-3.

That left it up to Shkrob. The sophomore won the first set, 6-3, but suffered a 2-6 loss in the second set. In the third, Shkrob and FGCU's Javier Fernandez traded points until Shkrob broke him at 5-5, and then won the match in the 12th game when Fernandez returned a serve into the net.

Stetson will not only play for its first conference title on Sunday, but the Hatters are also seeking their first NCAA Tournament berth as the winner receives the ASUN's automatic bid.
