NCAA APR 2018

Hatters Continue to Excel in Annual NCAA APR Release

Today the NCAA announced results of the multiyear Academic Progress Rate report for all Division I athletics teams. For Stetson University, the report revealed five teams with perfect single-year scores and three teams with perfect multi-year scores.

Among Stetson Athletics' 17 NCAA sports – men's rowing is not an NCAA championship sport – nearly all performed well above the 930 minimum on the four-year APR report. The three programs with perfect multi-year scores were beach volleyball (1000), men's cross country (1000), and women's golf (1000).  All three programs were recently honored with NCAA Public Recognition Awards for posting APR scores in the top 10 percent of their sport.

Other programs achieving high multi-year APR scores were women's rowing (987), men's golf (986), indoor volleyball (984), lacrosse (982), men's soccer (980), women's soccer (979), softball (977), men's tennis (974), baseball (969), football (965), women's tennis (958), women's cross country (954), and women's basketball (933).

Men's basketball has a multi-year rate that fell slightly below the 930 minimum threshold (928).  However, the score does not subject the program to any penalties due to the team's demonstrated academic improvement.  The 2016-17 single-year APR for men's basketball came in at 955.

Stetson also had five programs achieve perfect 1000 single-year APR scores for the 2016-17 academic year - beach volleyball, men's cross country, men's golf, women's golf, and women's tennis.  Eleven other programs posted single-year scores of 950 or above.

Implemented in 2003 as part of an ambitious academic reform effort in Division I, the Academic Progress Rate (APR) holds institutions accountable for the academic progress of their student-athletes through a team-based metric that accounts for the eligibility and retention of each student-athlete for each academic term.

The APR emerged when Division I presidents and chancellors sought a more timely assessment of academic success at colleges and universities. At the time, the best measure was the graduation rate calculated under the federally mandated methodology that was based on a six-year window and did not take transfers into account.

The APR is calculated as follows:
  • Each student-athlete receiving athletically related financial aid earns one point for staying in school and one point for being academically eligible.
  • A team's total points are divided by points possible and then multiplied by 1,000 to equal the team's Academic Progress Rate.
  • In addition to a team's current-year APR, its rolling four-year APR is also used to determine accountability.
While the APR is intended as an incentive-based approach, it does come with a progression of penalties for teams that under-perform academically over time.
