Hatters Sweep Florida A&M To Improve to 2-0

Miami, Fla. -- Julie Varga recorded a career-high 10 kills and Emily DeStaffino dished out 37 assists in her Hatter debut as Stetson swept Florida A&M 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-16) Saturday afternoon at the FIU Kickoff.

Stetson hit .255 as a team to improve to 2-0 for the first time since 2014.

"I thought we did well and did what we needed to do on our side of the net," Stetson head coach Yang Deng said. "Florida A&M gave us some pressure here and there, but nothing consistent. It was good a confidence builder for us going into our next game."

Briana Schmid hit .455 (5-0-11) for the match and Riley Nieporte hit .389 (8-1-18).  Anna Bezhan came off the bench to record four kills in six swings during the third set.

Defensively, the Hatters registered seven blocks, including four solos.  Hao Jin (2s-1a) and DeStaffino (0s-3a) collected three blocks apiece.  Chelcie Spence picked up 13 digs.

Florida A&M (0-3) hit .183 as a team.

The Hatters will face FIU at 4 p.m. for the FIU Kickoff Championship.
