Hatters Edged at Charleston

College of Charleston's Tucker Heffron scored the game-winning goal midway through the second half as the Cougars handed Stetson a 2-1 defeat in the Aaron Olitsky Memorial Classic, Sunday at Charleston, S.C.

Stetson (0-2) jumped out to an early lead when senior Julien Coulomb scored his first goal of the season in the 11th minute. Freshman Sebastian Chalbaud sent Coulomb a perfect corner kick from the left side, and Coulomb headed it past the Charleston keeper for a 1-0 lead.

The scored remained 1-0 until the Cougars (1-1) struck back in the 32nd minute. Charleston's Jake Nicholson tied the match thanks to a strong pass from Joao deSouza from midfield.

Stetson and Charleston continued to battle over the next 30 minutes before Heffron scored what would be the game winner, thanks to a bit of good fortune. Heffron's shot was a blast from 25 yards out that hit the left post and bounced past Stetson keeper Braeden Luna to make it a 2-1 affair in the 63rd minute.

Despite being down the Hatters didn't give up. Stetson got off four shots in the final 27 minutes and added five corner kicks in the same span but they couldn't find the net.

Luna faced nine shots and made a pair of saves. The Hatters launched 18 shots but just were on-goal.

Stetson returns to action when the Hatters visit FIU, 7 p.m., Friday, Aug. 31.
