Menayese Leads Hatters to Season's First Win

Stetson's Elvis Menayese scored twice and Daniel O'Brien also scored as Stetson downed FIU, 3-2, Friday in Miami, Fla.

Menayese's effort not only helps the Hatters (1-2) earn their first victory of the season, but it also gives first-year head coach Cristian Neagu his first Stetson win.

Stetson had to rally to earn the win. FIU (0-3) started the scoring early in the first half when Santiago Patino found the goal in the 20th minute.

Down 1-0 as play headed into the second half, the Hatters came alive during a five-minute span. O'Brien took an assist from Gabriel Diniz and tied the match with a goal in the 53rd minute, then Menayese gave the Hatters the lead with his first career goal in the 58th minute, with O'Brien getting credit for the assist.

The Hatters maintained a one-goal lead until late in the half when they were able to benefit from a man advantage after an FIU red card. With just over two minutes to play, Menayese scored the difference-maker when he broke free and beat the keeper in front of the goal for a 3-1 lead.

Menayese's second goal proved to be an important one as the Panthers took advantage of a defensive breakdown in front of the Stetson goal in the final minute to score. FIU's Joris Ahlinvi poked a shot past Stetson keeper Braeden Luna with less than 30 seconds to play to get the Panthers within 3-2 but Stetson held on for the win.

Stetson took just seven shots but six were on-goal. FIU managed 15 shots as Luna made a pair of saves.

The Hatters next visit Bucknell on Sunday, Sept. 9.
