Hatters Cap Weekend With 3-1 Win Over MTSU

Naina Ivanova and Hao Jin named to the all-tournament team

Murfreesboro, Tenn. -- Stetson hit a season-high .344 en route to a 3-1 victory (25-23, 27-29, 25-21, 25-18) over Middle Tennessee Saturday evening in the final match of the MTSU Blue Raider Bash.

Setter Naina Ivanova registered 44 assists and 14 digs to help guide the Hatters (4-2) to their fourth win of the season.

She and Hao Jin were selected to the all-tournament team.

Stetson hit better than .300 in each set, but found itself tied 1-1 after MTSU won 29-27 in set 2.  The Hatters pulled away in sets 3 and 4, however, converting at a .400 clip over the final frame.

Several Hatters posted high attack percentages, including Jin (.667), Rebecca Ingram (.412), and Eva Deisa (.300).  Jin finished with 12 kills without committing an error while adding six blocks.  Deisa posted a team-high 15 kills while Charlotte Earnhart recorded 14 kills and 10 digs for her first double-double of the year.  She also served four aces.

Chelcie Spence picked up 23 digs to top the 20-dig mark for the fourth time this season.

Stetson had dropped a 3-0 decision to Austin Peay earlier on Saturday.

"I think overall we did well the entire day," Stetson head coach Yang Deng said.  "Austin Peay just made a few fewer errors than we did, but we competed against a conference championship team from last year.

"After the last two matches, I told the girls we could have just folded (against MTSU)," Deng added.  "We could have thought about what's happened to us in the past.  Instead, there was so much energy and everyone went in prepared. We had a really good finish, and I told them how proud I am about the way we responded."

Bailey Mason had 17 kills and 19 digs to lead the Blue Raiders (1-5).

The Hatters will travel to Texas next weekend to compete at the SFA Invitational. Stetson will face St. John's and Grambling on Friday and Stephen F. Austin on Saturday.
