Hatters, Flames Battle to Draw in ASUN Opener

Liberty scored twice in the final five minutes of regulation as the Flames battled Stetson to a 3-3 draw in the ASUN Conference opener for both teams, Thursday at the Athletic Training Center.

In a game which featured a little bit of everything, neither team was ever able to take control for long. Liberty (3-3-1, 0-0-1) scored early, Stetson (2-2-1, 0-0-1) became the aggressor in the middle of the match, and the Flames countered late in regulation to force overtime.

Liberty took an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Kevin Mendoza in the 6th minute, as Bobby Bynum and Geovanny Murillo assisted on the score.

The Hatters controlled play from that point forward, and finally got on the board in the 41st minute. Senior Nathan Monsanto scored his first career goal off a scramble from a free kick, knotting the score at 1-1.

Stetson sophomore William Suaut gave the Hatters a 2-1 lead in the 70th minute when he knocked in a Julien Coulomb shot that was saved by Liberty keeper Brogan Engbers. The goal was also the first career score for Suaut.

Liberty helped the Hatters take a 3-1 lead less than five minutes later. Sebastian Chalbaud's free kick from 30 yards out was knocked down by Engbers at the goal line. It appeared initially that Suaut may have knocked the ball in for his second goal of the game.

But television replays showed that a Liberty defender actually punched the ball into the net with his hand for an own-goal. Either way, the Hatters had what appeared to be a commanding 3-1 lead in the latter stages of the match.

Liberty, however, had different ideas. The Flames rallied, getting goals from Blake Myers (86') and Tresor Mbuyu (89') in the final 4:55 to send the game to overtime.

In extra time, the Hatters were forced to play a man down after Raphael Northoff received a red card in the 98th minute. Stetson was able to hold off the Flames in the final 12 minutes for the draw.

Stetson out-shot Liberty, 20-17. The 20 shots are a season high for the Hatters.

Stetson doesn't have much time to relax as the Hatters welcome UCF to the ATC for a 7 p.m., Saturday kickoff.
