Late Goals Doom Hatters

UCF scored three times in the final three minutes as the Knights rallied for a 4-2 win, Saturday at the Athletic Training Center in DeLand.

Saturday's result marked the second straight game in which the Hatters' opponent overcame a deficit in the final minutes of regulation. On Thursday, Liberty scored twice in the final five minutes to erase a 3-1 deficit and ultimately force a draw.

William Suaut gave the Hatters a 2-1 lead in the 84th minute, when he headed in a corner kick from Nathan Monsanto.

That score seemed to light a fire under UCF (5-1-1). The Knights wasted little time in scoring the equalizer as Hattabiou Barry hit a laser from 18 yards out in the 88th minute. Just over a minute later, Cal Jennings scored his second goal of the game for a 3-2 lead, and Jennings finished the hat trick 90 seconds later for the final margin.

Despite a second straight painful result, Stetson head coach Cristian Neagu was able to find some positives.

"We need to play 90 minutes, 85 minutes doesn't count," Neagu said "But I thought we had a better performance tonight than we did against Liberty. I'm incredibly disappointed with the result, but very proud of the effort and the adjustments from the last game. We are a young team with a lot of new guys, but that's no excuse. We need to close games out."

The game started with Stetson (2-3-1) being the aggressor. The Hatters took the game's first five shots but after that barrage, the contest settled into an ebb-and-flow.

The Hatters finally broke through when Erwan Colas made an outstanding individual play, stealing the ball off the foot of UCF goalkeeper Yannick Oettel as Oettel tried to dribble away from pressure. Colas circled the keeper, took the ball and poked in an easy goal from five yards out for a 1-0 lead in the 40th minute.

UCF evened the score when Jennings snagged his first goal of the game. Jennings took a simple cross from Ricardo Oilveros in the 52nd minute and scored from just in front of the goal.

The teams again waged a back-and-forth before Suaut broke through for his score.

Stetson will play its third game in six days when the Hatters visit NC State, Tuesday, in Raleigh, N.C.
