Hatters Fall to Brown in Home Opener

DeLand, Fla. -- Brown spoiled Stetson's home opener Friday evening as the Bears defeated the Hatters 3-1 (17-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-12) on the first day of the Stetson Invitational.

In front of a crowd of 416 at the Edmunds Center, the Hatters (6-4) collected 15 blocks and 60 digs in the match, but posted just 38 kills and hit .112 as a team.

"We just didn't perform well," Stetson head coach Yang Deng said. "I think they were excited to play at home, but at the same time, they were afraid to lose.  We didn't play the way we are supposed to play, and when you are that tight, you just can't function."

Eva Deisa led the team with 14 kills.  Naina Ivanova registered a 25-dig, 18-assist double double, adding four aces.  Chelcie Spence picked up 16 digs while Brianna Schmid tied a season-high with nine blocks.

Gabrielle Moriconi led the Bears (6-2) with 17 kills.

"It was a good lesson for us," Deng said.  "It's better that it happened now and not after conference starts.  We are a better team than what we showed today, and we need to come out tomorrow and prove it."

Brown defeated Chicago State 3-2 earlier on Friday.  Bethune-Cookman also defeated Chicago State 3-1.

The Hatters will face Chicago State at 11 a.m. Saturday followed by a 6 p.m. match against Bethune-Cookman.
