Hatters Claim Victory in Season-Opening Match

Stetson men's tennis swept its way through singles en route to an impressive season-opening 6-1 win over Morgan State, Wednesday at Mandy Stoll Tennis Center.

Stetson featured a lineup comprised of four freshmen. Head coach Christophe Noblet was pleased with the overall performance of his young squad.

"Today, we put forth probably the youngest lineup in my few years at Stetson," Noblet said. "It was great to see all those young players experiencing their first college match, and having to deal with the stress that comes with it. Some great lessons to pick up from today, as we prepare to face a tough Miami team on Friday."

The Hatters (1-0) needed a few extra sets, but they rallied for a clean sweep in singles after dropping the doubles point. The tandem of Josh Laka & Tim Gennes were the only doubles team to win for the Hatters, taking a 6-1 win at No. 2.

In singles play, the Hatters struck quickly. Christian Mills evened the score with a 6-0, 6-0 win on Court 6, and Coilin MacNamara followed with a 6-1, 6-2 win at Court 5 as the Hatters gained a 2-1 lead.

Linus Bergevi gave the Hatters a 3-1 advantage with a 6-3, 6-4 victory on Court 1, and Gennes clinched the match for the Hatters with a 6-1, 7-5 win on Court 4.

Louis Gorregues (4-6, 6-2, 6-4) and Clement Hamel (5-7, 6-4, 6-2) closed out the day for the Hatters with wins on Courts 3 and 4, respectively.

Stetson returns to action on Friday when the Hatters visit Miami.
