Hatters Down Embry-Riddle, 5-2

Stetson women's tennis downed Embry-Riddle, 5-2, on Saturday at Mandy Stoll Tennis Center.

On a chilly and windy day, the Hatters had to work overtime to come out with the win. Two singles matches reached tiebreakers, as did one doubles match. Stetson head coach Travis Sandlant was pleased to get the victory but wants to see a better finish from the Hatters (2-1).

"I was pretty happy with the performance overall but we've got some areas to work on," he said. "Closing out was a challenge for us today. If we had taken our first opportunities it would have been a lot more comfortable. But credit to Embry-Riddle; they fought hard. But we have to keep working at that area because it's a spot we need to work on."

The Hatters opened by winning the doubles point. Danel Ashirova & Lucie Renault breezed to a 6-0 win on Court 1, but the Hatters had to fight to get the point. The Eagles took a 7-5 decision on Court 2 before Stetson's Alexe Viaud & Megan Horwitz emerged with a 7-6 win at No. 3 to give the Hatters a 1-0 lead overall.

Brooke Milner (6-1, 6-0) and Viaud (6-4, 6-0) made quick work of their opponents on Courts 3 and 5, respectively, as Stetson grabbed a 3-0 advantage. Lucie Renault clinched the match for the Hatters with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 2.

With victory in hand, the Hatters secured just one more singles win as Ashirova came out on top in a tight contest at No. 1, winning by scores of 7-5, 7-6.

Horwitz (Court 6) and Vicky Geurinckx (Court 4) suffered three-set losses.

The Hatters return to action when they visit Bethune-Cookman, 2:30 p.m., Friday, Feb. 1.
