Penzkofer Captures Singles Title as Hatters Close Two Tournament Weekend

Stetson's Fabian Penzkofer captured the singles title at the Varner Memorial Invitational, Sunday at Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla.

Penzkofer defeated Rollins' Atakan Gezer 6-2, 6-3 to win the Flight A singles championship.

"I am proud of Fabian for the way he competed this weekend," Stetson head coach Christophe Noblet said. "He controlled his environment in every match he played, and clearly increased his level day by day. This tournament should give him the confidence boost he was looking for, and we are excited for his future growth."

Josh Laka turned in a strong singles performance as well, finishing third in Flight B, while the doubles team of Penzkofer and Laka also finished third in the Flight A doubles.

Over at the Bedford Cup in Tallahassee, the Hatters had two chances to earn championships but came up empty. Christian Mills reached the B Flight finals but lost in two sets. Mills and playing partner Tim Gennes also competed in the B Flight doubles but suffered an 8-4 defeat.

Overall on Sunday, Stetson won twice in singles and once in doubles at the Bedford Cup

Up next for the Hatters is the Juan Varon Wildcat Invitational, Oct. 25-27, in Daytona Beach. Select Hatters will also participate in the ITA Regional in Gainesville.
