Hatters Edged at North Florida

North Florida scored twice in the second half and Stetson's furious rally fell just short as the Ospreys edged the Hatters, 2-1, in a crucial ASUN Conference men's soccer game for both teams, Sunday at Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville.

The loss not only drops Stetson to 7-6-2 overall and 3-1-1 in conference play, it also puts the Hatters into a 3-way tie with UNF and FGCU at the top of the ASUN standings with just two weeks left in the regular season.

Stetson controlled play for much of the first half but the game went into halftime scoreless. The Ospreys (4-5-2, 3-1-1) exploded midway through the second half, taking control of the game.

In the 64th minute Bryson Smith broke free down the right side and scored off a perfect cross from Jake Hawker for a 1-0 UNF lead.

Less than 90 seconds later, the Ospreys doubled their lead when Landen Haig scored for a 2-0 advantage.

Sebastian Chalbaud cut the lead in half with a penalty kick in the 73rd minute. Chalbaud's first goal of the season made it a 2-1 game.

From there, the game turned into a scramble. Stetson had a few good opportunities late. The best chance to score came with just over 30 seconds left when Chris DeGance's attempt from in close was poked just over the crossbar by UNF keeper Padraic Gilley.

Stetson out-shot UNF, 12-8, but Gilley was strong in goal, making three saves. Stetson's Lute Lillo-Portero made one save.

Up next the Hatters visit SMU on Tuesday.
