Hatters Sweep ASUN Weekly Awards

DeLand, Fla. -- Following two dramatic five-set road victories this past weekend, the Stetson volleyball team swept all three weekly awards from the ASUN Conference, the league announced on Monday.

Senior middle blocker Brianna Schmid (Wake Forest, N.C.) earns her first ASUN Player of the Week honor, junior libero Chelcie Spence (El Paso, Texas) collects her second ASUN Defensive Player of the Week award, and rookie outside hitter Elena Djokovic (Belgrade, Serbia) garners her first ASUN Freshman of the Week honor.

It Stetson's first-ever three-player sweep of the weekly awards and the first by any ASUN team since FGCU did it last season.

Schmid had a stellar all-around week for the Hatters, producing 26 kills and a .510 attack percentage while contributing 11 blocks.  On Friday, she recorded a career-high 14 kills with no errors (.538), adding seven digs, three blocks and an ace in Stetson's come-from-behind win at North Florida.  On Sunday, Schmid netted 12 kills with only one error (.478) and eight block assists in the Hatters' victory at Lipscomb.  She had two kills and two blocks in the fifth set alone to help Stetson rally from 7-4 and 10-8 deficits.

It is the third consecutive week a Hatter has earned ASUN Player of the Week honors.  Eva Deisa was selected on Oct. 14 and Emily DeStaffino was tabbed on Oct. 21.

Spence racked up 53 digs and averaged 5.3 digs-per-set to help lead an overall spectacular team defensive effort. She picked up a team-high 23 digs at UNF and a match-high 30 digs at Lipscomb, including 17 in the final two sets alone.  She surpassed the 1200-dig mark for her career and moved into third place among Stetson's all-time dig leaders.

Djokovic continued her outstanding play of late, averaging 3.6 kills, 1.1 digs and 0.7 blocks-per-set in the two victories.  She collected a team-high and a career-high 19 kills while hitting .286 in the win at UNF.  She then led the team again with 17 kills, including four in the decisive fifth set, adding five digs and five blocks in the win at Lipscomb.

With the two victories, the Hatters (9-11, 6-4 ASUN) extended their overall win streak to seven in a row and their ASUN win streak to six in a row.  They also defeated Lipscomb for the first time since 2003.

Stetson will seek its eighth win in a row at 6 p.m. Wednesday against Jacksonville.
