Hatters, Dolphins Battle to Scoreless Draw

Stetson and Jacksonville played to a scoreless draw in ASUN Conference women's soccer action, Thursday at the Athletic Training Center in DeLand.

Despite holding a 23-11 advantage in shots, the Hatters (2-7-2, 0-1-1) were unable to find the net. Stetson took 20 shots after halftime.

"We did everything we wanted to do tonight except put the ball in the net," Stetson head coach Chris Bergmann said. "We had a good game plan and executed it well. I love how aggressive we were after halftime and in the overtime period. We can feel good about how we played on that end of the field as we head into our next game on Sunday."

The Hatters had several outstanding scoring changes, but Jacksonville goalkeeper Kristian Shores was outstanding in goal with 10 saves.

Perhaps Stetson's best chance to score came with the clock under 10 seconds at the end of regulation when Jordan Ross broke free on the right side of box. Ross had a clean look and her shot appeared to be headed into the net, but Shores reached up and punched the ball over the crossbar as the horn sounded.

While Stetson's offense was a bit frustrated, the Hatters' defense was strong. Stetson's back line limited the Dolphins (0-8-3, 0-2-1) to just nine shots in 110 minutes, with just three on-goal. Stetson freshman keeper Lara Bates made all three saves for her first career shutout.

"Defensively we never really gave them much room tonight," Bergmann said. "They had three shots on goal and I didn't think they ever really threatened us. It was a strong night for the defense and important for that group to get the shutout."

The Hatters continue ASUN play when they face Kennesaw State, 1 p.m., Sunday in Kennesaw, Ga.
