Hatters Edge Morehead State 58-55

Defensive Effort Leads to First Road Win of the Season

Morehead, Ky. -- Day'Neshia Banks registered a 17-point, 12-rebound double-double as Stetson held off Morehead State 58-55 in the opening game of the Eagle Invitational at Johnson Arena.

Freshman Tippy Robertson added 12 points as the Hatters improved to 2-1 on the young season.

Stetson won despite committing 34 turnovers.

"We were very fortunate to win the game," Stetson head head coach Lynn Bria said.  "It was a very sloppy game.  I am happy we won, I am happy our players did what they had to do to down the stretch, but the execution was not there.  I thought our energy was good, I thought our effort was very good, but we had way to many turnovers."

With the score tied at 41 after three quarters, Stetson kicked off a wild fourth quarter with a 9-0 run.  Robertson scored five consecutive points during the stretch with a 3-pointer from the corner and a fastbreak layup.

Stetson still led by seven with 1:55 to go when Morehead State (0-2) made a late run.  The Eagles cut the deficit to two and had the ball with 42 seconds to go when Megan Vincent blocked a potential game-tying shot.

At the other end, Maddie Novak hit two free throws to put Stetson back ahead by four, but a quick 3-pointer by Ellie Jo Johnson trimmed the Hatters' lead back down to one.

Morehead State then got the ball back after a held ball resulted in a change of possession, but Kennedi Colclough pulled down a missed jumper with four seconds left to help seal the victory.

"It was stressful, but we pulled through," Robertson said.  "I think we need to execute better, but we got some big rebounds down the stretch."

Stetson shot 50 percent from the floor for the game and blocked nine shots as a team.  Vincent had four blocks and Kendall Lentz blocked three.  Stetson also outrebounded Morehead State 41-27.

The Eagle Invitational continues Saturday when the Hatters face Saint Francis at 3 p.m.

Notes:
  • Day'Neshia Banks recorded her fifth career double-double. Her 12 rebounds were a career-high
  • Freshmen Kimia Carter and Tippy Robertson made their first career starts
