Hatters Fall Short Against Saint Francis

Morehead, Ky. -- Despite having four players score in double figures, Stetson fell 78-73 to Saint Francis Saturday on the second day of the Eagle Invitational at Johnson Arena.

The Hatters (2-2) earned a split in the two-day tournament after defeating Morehead State 58-55 on Friday.

For the second straight day, the game came down to the wire. The lead changed hands five times in the final 10 minutes, but unlike Friday's result the Hatters came up a few points shy on Saturday.

"I thought we battled," Stetson head coach Lynn Bria said.  "It was a back-and-forth the whole game. We just didn't guard down the stretch. We fouled them way too much, sent them to the free throw line, and it just really hurt us."

Offensively, the Hatters scored 73 points and shot 42 percent from the floor.  Freshman Maddie Novak led the way with a season-high 18 points, hitting five times from behind the arc.  Her 3-pointer from the top of the key with 4:36 to go gave Stetson a brief 63-62 lead.

"We finally found some ways to score," Bria said.  "I really felt like Maddie had a great game.  She is getting more and more consistent - more confident.  I thought Tonysha (Curry) had a good game.  Jamiya (Turner) came in and gave us a spark, which I thought was really good."

Day'Neshia Banks registered 15 points, seven rebounds, three blocks and three steals. Tonysha Curry scored a season-high 12 and Megan Vincent added 10.

Saint Francis (1-2) made the most of its free throw opportunities, hitting 25 of 31 attempts from the line.  Stetson was 11-for-15.  Karson Swogger scored 29 points for the Red Flash.

The Hatters will continue their four-game road trip Tuesday night at Tennessee.  Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. with live coverage on SECN+.

Notes:
  • Stetson had its streak of 23 straight wins when leading after three quarters halted
  • The Hatters committed just 12 turnovers Saturday after registering 34 on Friday
  • With three blocks, Megan Vincent moved into fifth place in school history with 123 career rejections
