Hatters Subdued by FGCU in Regular-Season Finale

Ajmeer Spengler and Brock Exline each scored goals for Stetson but it wasn't enough as the Hatters closed out the regular season with a 4-2 loss to ASUN Conference rival FGCU, Saturday at the Athletic Training Center in DeLand.

Prior to the start of the game the Hatters honored seniors David Bergstrom, Finn Busmann, Chris Degance, Gabriel Diniz, and Raphael Northoff as they played at home for the final time.

In a match which had significant post-season implications for both teams, the Eagles (8-7-2 overall, 4-1-1 ASUN) controlled play for much of the game, out-shooting Stetson (7-9-2, 3-2-1) by a 21-14 margin over the course of 90 minutes.

After each team spent the first 15 sizing each other up, the Eagles drew first blood. Ivan Rosales gave FGCU a 1-0 lead as Shak Adams provided the assist in the 20th minute.

FGCU grabbed a 2-0 advantage six minutes later when O'Vante Mullings ran through the Stetson defense from midfield and scored.

The Hatters cut into FGCU's lead before halftime as Ajmeer Spengler scored on a shot just inside the left post in the 35th minute.

Play moved into the second half and FGCU regained its two-goal lead. Adams scored the first of his two goals on the night in the 56th minute when he headed in a Kareem Riley free kick for a 3-1 lead.

Adams struck again in the 82nd minute as the Eagles extended their lead to 4-1.

Brock Exline put the Hatters within two scores on his first goal of the season, a header off a perfect cross from Lewis Scattergood in the 86th minute.

The Hatters next move onto the ASUN Tournament as the No. 4 seed. Stetson will face fifth-seed Lipscomb, 7 p.m., Friday, Nov. 8 in Newark, N.J. The winner will face top seed and regular-season champion NJIT in the semifinals on Sunday, Nov. 10.
