Chalbaud's Late Score Lifts Hatters in ASUN Tournament

Stetson's Sebastian Chalbaud scored the game-winning goal with three seconds remaining in regulation to lift the Hatters to a 2-1 win over Lipscomb in the ASUN Tournament quarterfinals, Friday in Newark, N.J.

No. 4 seed Stetson next faces top seed and home-standing NJIT, 3 p.m., Sunday for a trip to the championship game. Lipscomb, the two-time defending tournament champion, is eliminated.

Chalbaud's heroics were set up by teammates Finn Busmann and William Suaut, with an extra assist from Ninrod Picado.

With the clock wining down, Picado controlled the ball just past midfield and sent a pass out wide to the right to Busmann, who sent a cross into the box. After a failed clearing header by a defender, Suaut tapped the ball to Chalbaud five feet in front of the goal and Chalbaud simply flicked a shot into the back of the net, setting off a wild celebration.

The Hatters (8-9-2) and Bisons (5-9-2) battled through the cold and a scoreless first half before things heated up on the field after halftime. Stetson's Chris DeGance gave the Hatters a 1-0 lead in the 49th minute with his fourth goal of the season, sneaking a shot from the right side just inside the left post. Lewis Scattergood had the assist.

Lipscomb tied things up 10 minutes later when John Wynia found the net on a chip shot over goalkeeper Lute Lilli-Portero. It was the only blemish on Portero's sheet, but it tied the game and set the stage for Chalbaud's heroics.

Stetson managed just eight shots for the game but they made the most of their attempts. Portero faced 17 shots from the Bisons and made six saves to up his league-leading total to 71.
