Hatters Drop Defensive Battle to Lipscomb in ASUN Quarterfinal

Chelcie Spence breaks her own single-match digs record

Box Score Fort Myers, Fla. — Despite a strong team defensive effort that included 99 digs and 10 blocks, the Hatters fell 3-1 to Lipscomb in their ASUN quarterfinal match Thursday night at Alico Arena.

The fourth-seeded Bisons (16-12) won by scores of 18-25, 25-19, 30-28, 25-20 to advance to Friday's semifinals. The fifth-seeded Hatters closed their 2019 season with a record of 12-15.

The third set proved costly for Stetson, which led 20-13, 22-17, and 27-26 before Lipscomb took the frame 30-28 and the lead in the match.

"Overall, it was a good season," Stetson head coach Yang Deng said.  "There are moments we have to learn that being consistently good is how the results come. When you get to a certain level, the margin for error gets smaller and smaller.  That means you have to be even more consistent.  You have to earn your points and play your own game at the highest level."

"I am still proud of them for coming together as a tribe, like we worked on," Deng added. "They helped each other get through many different things."

Stetson's 99 digs included a school-record 37 from Chelcie Spence, who surpassed her own previous single-match (rally-scoring era) record of 36 digs set against Lipscomb earlier this season.

Emily DeStaffino (15), Eva Deisa (13), Naina Ivanova (13) and Alejandra Perez (11) also recorded double-digit dig totals.

Deisa led the offense with 15 kills, landing her right on the 300-kill mark for the season.  It was her 13th double-double of the season and the 29th of her career.  She is the first Hatter in three seasons to record 300 kills.

DeStaffino dished out 50 assists for her 13th double-double of the season and 15th of her career. She finished the season with 957 assists, the most by a Hatter since Kayla Weller had 1107 assists in 2014.

Brianna Schmid tallied nine kills and four blocks. She finished the season with a .326 attack percentage, the highest for a Hatter since Karla Readshaw (.348) in 2007.
