Hatters Open ASUN Play Friday Against Lipscomb

Stetson men's soccer begins its quest for the ASUN Conference championship on Friday when the fourth-seeded Hatters face No. 5 seed Lipscomb in the ASUN Tournament quarterfinals at 7 p.m. in Newark, N.J.

Friday's winner will face top seed and host NJIT in the semifinals at 3 p.m. on Sunday. The other half of the tournament bracket is being contest in Fort Myers, Fla., at No. 2 seed FGCU. The ASUN championship game is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 15 at the home site of the highest remaining seed.

The Hatters (7-9-2) will be making their 24th appearance in the ASUN Tournament, most among active schools. Stetson is 11-19-4 all-time in ASUN Tournament play, winning championships in both 2005 and 2009.

Last season, the Hatters made a surprising run to the title game, defeating North Florida (3-1) and knocking off FGCU in penalty kicks before falling to Lipscomb, 2-0, in the championship game.

The Bisons (5-8-2) are seeking their third straight ASUN men's soccer championship. No number five seed has ever won the ASUN Tournament.

Stetson and Lipscomb met earlier this season in DeLand, with the Hatters claiming a 3-1 win on Oct. 12. Ajmeer Spengler, Chris DeGance and Lewis Scattergood each scored goals for Stetson.

Notable News: This is just the third time in 24 tournament appearances that Stetson has been the No. 4 seed … no fourth seed has ever won the tournament … Stetson's 24 tournament appearance are a conference record … head coach Cristian Neagu is 1-1-1 all-time in tournament play … freshman goalkeeper Lute Lillo-Portero leads the ASUN with 65 saves … senior Gabriel Diniz is tied for the league lead with six assists.
