McCauley Named ASUN Defensive Player of the Year; Five Other Hatters Honored

Stetson's Ian McCauely was named ASUN Conference Defensive Player of the Year in men's soccer, and five other Hatters received all-conference honors in voting by league head coaches, as the ASUN announced its yearly awards on Thursday,

Joining McCauley on the all-conference first team is sophomore Sebastian Chalbaud. Freshman Lute Lillo-Portero and senior Gabriel Diniz were named second team all-conference, while freshmen Calum Ferguson and Gio Rodriguez earned spot on the All-Freshmen team.

McCauley is the third Hatter to win Defensive Player of the Year honors, and the first since 2011. The fifth-year senior has long been considered the league's top one-on-one defender and this year he was finally honored. After missing the 2018 season with injury, McCauley has spearheaded Stetson's defensive efforts all year. He's made a contribution offensively as well, with one goal and two assists.

McCauley's best individual effort this season came in Stetson's 1-0 win over eventual league champion NJIT, as he held ASUN Player of the Year and league leading scorer Rene White to just one shot.

Chalbaud, a midfielder, earns his first all-conference honor after playing 16 games and making 14 starts. He scored one goal and had one assist in the regular season.

Lillo-Portero turned in a terrific rookie season with the Hatters. He enters the postseason leading the ASUN with in both saves (65) and shutouts (5). He has played every minute in goal for Stetson in 2019.

Diniz earns his second all-conference nod. Stetson's playmaker, he currently leads the ASUN with six assists. Diniz has made 16 starts while playing in all 17 games this season.

Ferguson emerged as one of the ASUN's top defenders in his freshman season. He has started all 17 games, scoring his only goal of the season against Georgia Southern.

Rodriguez gave Stetson's offense a jolt this year as the speedy midfielder appeared in 15 games. He scored the game-winning goal earlier this season at Liberty, and also had an assist in a win over Winthrop.

The Hatters face Lipscomb in the ASUN Tournament quarterfinals, 7 p.m., Friday, in Newark, N.J.
