Hatters Rally for 66-60 Win Over Tulsa

Kimia Carter scores the final six points for the Hatters

DeLand, Fla. -- After a wild fourth quarter that saw the lead change hands nine times, a Stetson freshman stepped up and took control of the game.

Kimia Carter's driving layup with 34.6 seconds to play gave the Hatters the lead for good as Stetson rallied for a 66-60 victory over Tulsa Sunday afternoon at the Edmunds Center.

Carter also hit the final four free throws and grabbed two big defensive rebounds down the stretch to help the Hatters (5-5) improve to 4-0 at home this season.

"I am just really proud of our fight," Stetson head coach Lynn Bria said.  "The game went back and forth.  I thought it was a series of different players making plays that made the difference in the game."

Stetson trailed on six different occasions in the fourth quarter but never let Tulsa pull away.  Tippy Robertson delivered a huge 3-pointer with 3:41 to go to put Stetson ahead 55-53.  Day'Neshia Banks and Megan Vincent also hit go-ahead buckets in the final two minutes, but the Hurricane fought back each time.

With the score tied at 60, Vincent pulled down a defensive rebound, fed Robertson who delivered a long pass to Carter in front of the Stetson bench.  Carter then drove past two Tulsa defenders before scooping one in off the glass.

"We are learning how to play together," Carter said.  "Tippy came off the bench at hit a big 3.  Day Day had back-to-back baskets. We had Kendall diving on the floor.  Everybody did their part and it worked out for us."

Carter finished with a career-high 16 points, adding four rebounds a taking one charge.

"Kimia took some really good shots, finished around the basket and hit some big free throws to give us a bit of a cushion," Bria said.  "What I am most proud of is Kimia's defense. She is just doing so much better defensively and needs to keep that going."

Banks led all scorers with 17 points, while Jamiya Turner added 10.  Kendrian Elliott and Addison Richards each scored 13 points to lead Tulsa (3-8).

The Hatters shot 51 percent from the floor while the Hurricane shot just 36 percent.

The win was Stetson's first fourth-quarter comeback this season.

"Tulsa is a good team and a lot better than their record, so I think it is a great win for us," Bria said.

The Hatters will host Canisius and Bethune-Cookman on Thursday and Friday in the 32nd Annual Hatter Classic.

Notes:
  • The Hatters avenged a 55-54 loss at Tulsa last season
  • Day'Neshia Banks scored in double figures for the eighth straight game
  • Kennedi Colclough returned the lineup and contributed four points and six rebounds after missing the past three games.
  • Overall, Stetson scored 20 points off the bench
