Hatters Throw a Block Party in 68-52 Win Over Canisius

Vincent Breaks School Record

DeLand, Fla. -- Megan Vincent set a school single-game record with nine blocked shots, part of a team-record 14-block performance by the Hatters, as Stetson defeated Canisius 68-52 Thursday afternoon in the first game of the Hatter Classic at the Edmunds Center.

Day'Neshia Banks added an 11-point, 12-rebound double-double to help Stetson (6-5) improve to 5-0 at home this season.

"I thought Megs and really all of our bigs – Kennedi, Megs, and Day Day – all had a great game," Stetson head coach Lynn Bria said. "Day Day started out slow but had a much better second half.  I thought Jamiya came in and did really well for us.  We have different people stepping up, and I think our bigs are playing consistently well."

Vincent blocked four shots in the first half, including two back-to-back attempts in the final minute of the second quarter to lift Stetson to a 31-23 lead at the break.

The 6-4 junior then blocked three more shots in the third quarter to set a new career-high, and she added two blocks in the fourth quarter to surpass the previous program record of eight.  Four different Hatters had accomplished that feat a total of six times previously.

Overall, Vincent approached a triple double with 12 points and seven rebounds to go along with her nine blocks.  Kennedi Colclough led the Hatters with 14 points, adding nine rebounds, while ASUN Freshman of the Week Kimia Carter scored 10.

Stetson's 14 blocks also set the school single-game team record, topping the previous mark of 13 rejections against Bethune-Cookman in 2002.

Canisius led 5-0 early, but Stetson bounced back and took the lead for good after a pair of Kendall Lentz free throws made it 9-7.

The Hatters shot 37 percent for the game and held the Golden Griffins (1-6) to just 26 percent shooting.  Stetson held a 47-42 edge on the glass.

The Hatters will host Bethune-Cookman at 11 a.m. Friday on the final day of the Hatter Classic.  B-CU defeated Appalachian State 61-44 in the second game of the day.

Notes:
  • Vincent's nine blocks and Stetson's 14 blocks also set Hatter Classic records
  • It also ties for the fourth highest single-game total in the NCAA this season
  • Vincent moved into fourth on Stetson's all-time blocks list (142)
  • Banks has scored in double figures in nine straight games with five double-doubles
  • Stetson has led after the first quarter in eight of 11 games this season
