Hatters Edged by Bethune-Cookman 59-55

Stetson suffers first home loss of the season

DeLand, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman outscored Stetson 10-0 over the final three minutes of the game to post a 59-55 victory over the Hatters Friday afternoon at the Edmunds Center.

With the victory, the Wildcats (8-3) completed the 32nd Annual Hatter Classic with a 2-0 mark.  The Hatters split their two games and head into the holiday break with a 6-6 record.

"I thought we did a great job handling their pressure," Stetson head coach Lynn Bria said.  "We put ourselves in a position to win, but down the stretch, we just didn't make plays and they did.  I was proud of our fight, and I was proud of how we executed overall for 40 minutes."

Day'Neshia Banks earned a spot on the all-tournament team after recording a 19-point, 11-rebound double-double – her second of the week and sixth of the season.  She also scored the 500th point of her collegiate career.

Maddie Novak hit three 3s and finished with 14 points.  Kimia Carter added 10 points.  Jamiya Turner had five steals and no turnovers in 32 minutes at the point.

"I am really proud of Jamiya and how she handled the ball. She gave us a lot of good minutes and I was encouraged by her growth today.

"Our bigs did a great job again, and Kimia and Maddie hit some big shots when we needed them," Bria added.

Ciara Thompson scored 15 points to lead the Wildcats, who won the MEAC Championship last season.

"They are a very good team. They are a veteran team with three seniors," Bria said.  "They are going to do well in their conference and have a great chance to win their league once again."

One day after setting the school record with 14 blocked shots, Stetson blocked nine more shots on Friday.  Three of those came from Megan Vincent, giving her 12 for the tournament.  She joined Banks on the all-tournament team.

The Hatters will host Holy Cross on Dec. 30 at 2 p.m.
