Strong Second Half Not Enough as FIU Prevails

DeLAND--Five different players scored in double figures for FIU as Stetson suffered an 83-67 setback, Sunday at Edmunds Center.

Trejon Jacob led the Panthers (9-3) with 20 points, and Devon Andrews scored 18.

Mahamadou Diawara recorded his fourth double-double of the year for Stetson (5-9) with 15 points and 15 rebounds. Jahlil Rawley had 14 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals. Christiaan Jones also scored 14.

FIU never trailed as the Panthers jumped on the Hatters from the opening tip. FIU built an 18-10 lead before the second media timeout, and owned a 32-17 advantage with 4:48 to play in the first half. Their lead swelled to 42-24 at halftime.

Stetson slowly fought its way back into the game in the second half. The Hatters got to within nine points twice, with the final time coming when a Diawara free throw made it a 67-58 game with 5:56 to go. But the Hatters couldn't get any closer.

FIU shot 44 percent from the field, compared to 33 percent for the Hatters. Stetson owned a 44-39 rebounding advantage, but the Panthers sank 11 three-pointers while Stetson came up empty from beyond the arc.

After a short holiday break, the Hatters return to action when they visit South Carolina, 3 p.m., Monday, Dec. 30, in Columbia, S.C.
