Slow Start Sinks Hatters

Monmouth downed Stetson, 16-11, in lacrosse action on Saturday at the Athletic Training Center.

The Hatters (0-2) struggled in the first half, allowing 10 goals and committing 17 turnovers on the way to falling behind by six goals at halftime. Although Stetson recovered and got back in the game late in the second half, Stetson head coach Christy Leach wasn't pleased with her team's start.

"When they started to hit us we didn't react as well as we could have," Leach said. "We recovered and had a great second half in a lot of areas, but we couldn't get the ball to our attack. Our first half play really hurt us in the long run."

The Hawks (1-0) built a 10-4 lead, and eventually led 14-6 midway through the second half. But the Hatters (0-2) made a late charge to keep things interesting down the stretch.

Down eight goals, Stetson scored four of the next five goals as Jacklyn Lavoie, Riley Reagan and Taylor Zuberer (twice) found the back of the net to bring Stetson within15-10 with 7:02 to play.

With the lead cut to five, Monmouth countered with a goal by Logan Smet at 5:39 to make it 16-10. Zuberer scored her fourth goal of the game just over a minute later but the Hatters never got any closer.

Monmouth out-shot Stetson by a 40-25 count, and also forced the Hatters into 28 turnovers for the game.

Zuberer led Stetson with four goals, while Reagan and Shelby Lehmann each scored twice. Goalie Kiera McCarthy made 16 saves and added 8 ground balls.

Monmouth was led offensively by Smet's four goals.

The Hatters next visit Arizona State, 2 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 24 in Tempe, Ariz.
