Hatters Break Out In Saturday Sweep

Danielle Diaz Goes 4-for-4 in Game 1

Lake Buena Vista, Fla. -- Stetson won its first two games of the season Saturday, defeating Providence 7-2 and Villanova 8-3 on day 2 of the Citrus Blossom Classic at ESPN Wide World of Sports.

The Hatters (2-4) racked up 15 runs on 24 hits on the day, including six knocks with the bases loaded.

Danielle Diaz was 4-for-4 at the plate in Game 1 while while Lizzie Shubert hit her first home run of the season.  Diaz finished the day with five hits and Riley Russell had four.

Tori Perkins and Jaime Tino combined for 14 innings of work in the circle, allowing just three earned runs and nine hits.

"The pitching was solid. They were pitching with a lot more confidence today," Stetson head coach Frank Griffin said. "We got some key hits when we needed them, and the defense was solid all day.

"Linda (Ross) did a really good job at third base, and Danielle made some excellent catches in right field," Griffin added.  "She hit the ball really well, too."

In game 1, the Hatters trailed Providence 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth when Russell singled home a run and Elizabeth Jackson followed with an RBI double to pull Stetson even at 2-2.

Stetson then took the lead for good with a four-run fifth inning.  Shubert blasted a three-run home run to center field, and Jackson plated another run to give Stetson a 6-2 lead.  Diaz registered an RBI single in the sixth to cap the scoring.

In game 2, Stetson broke open a scoreless game with an eight-run fourth inning.  The Hatters collected five hits with the bases loaded and forced in two more with walks.  Devin Lewis delivered a two-run single as Stetson sent 13 batters to the plate.

Tino pitched 6.1 innings against Villanova before Perkins came in to record the final two outs.  The Hatters will look to end the tournament with a winning record when they face LIU Brooklyn at 9 a.m. Sunday.
