Hatters Drop Marathon to Tennessee Tech

Stetson men's tennis engaged in a five-hour battle with Tennessee Tech on Saturday and when the dust settled, the Hatters came out on the short end of a 4-3 score.

The team match was a true marathon, as five of six singles matches went a full three sets and one double match reached a tiebreaker.

"Today we showed fight and determination," Stetson head coach Christophe Noblet said. "We lost a very close match that spanned over five-and-a-half hours. It could have easily gone south very quickly but we were able to claw our way back into the match. We came close but were unable to get the result we wanted, but we are getting better."

Playing in Boca Raton, the Hatters (3-4) opened play by losing the doubles point. Josh Laka & Tim Gennes picked up a 7-5 win on Court 1, but the Golden Eagles clinched the point by winning 7-6 on Court 2.

Singles was a grueling affair. After Tennessee Tech earned a straight set victory on Court 2, the match became a war of attrition.

Antoine Sanchez was the first Hatter in the win column, taking a 1-6, 6-1, 6-1 decision on Court 3. Gennes followed with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 victory on Court 4 to knot the team match.

Clement Hamel gave the Hatters a 3-2 lead with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 triumph on Court 2 but the Hatters lost consecutive three-set matches on Courts 5 and 6 as the Eagles gained the overall victory.

Stetson also took on DePaul on Saturday afternoon but the match was postponed due to darkness with the Hatters trailing, 3-2.

The Hatters will face FAU after the conclusion of the DePaul match.
