Hatters Falter Down the Stretch

NJIT closed the game on a 15-1 run as the Highlanders rallied for an 82-77 win over Stetson in an ASUN Conference game, Wednesday at the Wellness & Events Center in Newark, N.J.
 
The Hatters (6-22 overall, 2-11 ASUN) appeared to be on the way to their first road victory of the season, leading 76-67 with 5:16 to play. But Stetson mustered only a Kenny Aninye free throw in the final five minutes as NJIT (19-9, 7-6) pulled away down the stretch.
 
Stetson trailed 48-43 at halftime and by a 52-45 score with 18:12 left in the game before rallying. The Hatters the outscored the Highlanders 31-15 over the next 12:56 to lead 76-67. That's when NJT began its comeback.
 
A three-pointer by Diego Willis got the Highlanders within 76-70, and a free throw by Abdul Lewis and layup by Shyquan Gibbs made it 76-73. Diandre Wilson's 3-pointer knotted the game at 76-76 with 2:20 to play, and Lewis gave the Highlanders the lead for good when his layup at 1:24 made it 78-76. Zach Cooks sank four free throws in the final 37 seconds to seal the win for NJIT.
 
Ricardo Lynch led the Hatters with 21 points on 7 of 12 shooting, including four 3-pointers. Aninye had 12 points, and Marques Sumner chipped in 10.
 
Cooks led NJIT with 21 points.
 
Game Notes
  • Aninye scored in double figures for the first time in the last four games (10 vs. Kennesaw State, Feb. 2)
  • Sumner has reached double figures in three straight games and four of the last five
  • Stetson was seeking its first ASUN road win since an 84-80 victory against the Highlanders on Feb. 10, 2018
  • Stetson finished the game with 10 three-pointers, the most for the Hatters since sinking 11 against Edward Waters on Jan. 3
  • Stetson reached double digits in three-pointers for the fourth time this season
  • Keith Matthews tied a career high with 7 rebounds
