Hatters Hold Off North Alabama

Stetson senior Leo Goodman scored a team-high 16 points, including a pair of clutch free throws with less than two seconds remaining, as the Hatters held on for an important 63-60 ASUN Conference victory over North Alabama, Saturday at Edmunds Center in DeLand.

Playing in his final home game as a Hatter, Godman was 5 of 11 from the field with four 3-pointers. His free throws with :01.6 to play gave Stetson (7-22 overall, 3-11 ASUN) a three-point lead. North Alabama (9-20, 6-8) got off a desperation shot, but unlike the last time these teams met, Kendarius Smith's heave at the buzzer was off the mark.

Saturday's game featured four ties and seven lead changes. Neither team led by more than eight points in a defensive battle in which both teams shot less than 40 percent from the field.

Stetson led, 34-29, at halftime and the Hatters took a 37-29 lead on Keith Matthews' jumper with 18:57 to play. From that point on, the Lions were the aggressor and eventually took a 41-40 lead on a triple by Kendall Stafford with 13:05 to play.

UNA's lead eventually reached 55-51 with 6:12 left, but the Lions were never able to pull away. A three-pointer by Marques Sumner and five straight points from Christiaan Jones tied the game at 59 all with 3:35 to play.

Neither team scored for the next two minutes until Kenny Aninye gave the Hatters the lead for good by draining a jumper for a 61-59 lead with 1:31 to play.

Jones joined Goodman in double figures with 15 points. Abayomi Iyiola grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds for the Hatters.

North Alabama's Tavon King scored a game-high 21 points.
