Hatters Fall at UNF

Stetson placed four players in double figures but the Hatters didn't have quite enough in a 77-67 loss to ASUN Conference foe North Florida, Tuesday at UNF Arena in Jacksonville.

Abayomi Iyiola led the Hatters with 16 points and a game-high 13 rebounds but Stetson (7-23, 3-12) couldn't overcome 39 percent shooting, including a 4 of 16 night beyond the arc.

North Florida led, 31-29, at halftime despite 13 points from Stetson's Christiaan Jones, but the Hatters came out a bit flat to start the second half and UNF (15-16, 9-7) took advantage.

The Ospreys opened the half with a 13-2 run, taking a 44-31 lead on a free throw by Wajid Aminu with 14:49 to play.

Stetson battled back and eventually pulled to within 46-42 as Jalen Crutchfield scored five straight points. Another Crutchfield three-pointer made it 49-45 with 10:37 to play, but the Hatters never got any closer.

Crutchfield, a freshman, scored a career-high 15 points in 20 minutes off the bench. Jones finished with 15 points on 6 of 14 shooting, and Leo Goodman chipped in with 10.

UNF's Garrett Sams led all scorers with 23 points. As a team, North Florida sank 12 three-pointers (on 36 attempts), and owned a 46-39 rebounding advantage.

Game Notes
  • Kenny Aninye became the 32nd player in program history to reach 100 assists in a season. He finished the game with 4 assists and now has 103 For the season.

  • Jalen Crutchfield was 6 of 9 from the field with 3 three-pointers
  • Abayomi Iyiola recorded his 8th double-double of the season and also tied a career high with 4 blocked shots
  • Leo Goodman reached double figures for the 10th time this season and 34th time in his career
  • Stetson's 7 turnovers were the Hatters' second-lowest figure of the season (5, vs. UNF, 1/16/19)

Quoting Coach Williams
"In the second half we couldn't get enough stops. I thought we played hard the entire time and we competed, but at the end of the day you've got to get stops. You have to be able to find a way to fight through those times when you aren't scoring. You can't allow your opponent to score, and I didn't think we did that the first few minutes of the second half."

Up Next
The Hatters close out the 2018-19 regular-season at Kennesaw State, 7 p.m., Friday. The winner of the game will serve as the No. 8 seed for next week's ASUN Tournament.
