Hatters Split With North Dakota

Tori Perkins fires a three-hit shutout

DeLand, Fla. -- Danielle Diaz delivered an RBI double and Tori Perkins tossed a three-hit shutout as Stetson defeated North Dakota 1-0 Friday afternoon in the first game of the Hatter Classic at Patricia Wilson Field.  North Dakota rallied from a late 4-0 deficit to take game two 9-4.

Elizabeth Jackson had four hits and two runs on the day to lead the offense.

In game one, Perkins allowed just three hits, all singles, and only one walk while tying a career-high with seven strikeouts.  She needed just 77 pitches to secure her first shutout of the season and the 14th of her career.  She did not allow a runner past second base.

The Hatters (4-9) tallied their lone run in the bottom of the third when Jackson led off with a single, stole second, and moved to third on Riley Russell's grounder.  Diaz then doubled through the 5-6 hole to score Jackson with the game's only run.

The contest was decided in just 67 minutes.  Stetson's last 1-0 win came on April 28 last season at UNF.

In game two, the Hawks (6-10) rallied from a 4-0 deficit with three runs in the sixth and six in the seventh to grab the victory.

Stetson scored three runs in the first inning on a squeeze bunt by Diaz and a pair of sacrifice flies by Ashly Smith and Amanda Nikhazy.  Allie Carroll's RBI double in the second scored Russell to give Stetson a 4-0 lead.

The Hatter Classic continues Saturday as Stetson hosts Mount St Mary's at 4 p.m. and North Dakota at 6:30 p.m.
