Hatters Blank Mount St. Mary's, Fall to North Dakota

Amanda Nikhazy hits first career home run

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 DeLand, Fla. -- Tori Perkins tossed her second consecutive shutout and Stetson scored all five runs in the fifth inning in a 5-0 victory over Mount St. Mary's Saturday at Patricia Wilson Field.

North Dakota defeated Stetson 6-3 in game two as the Hatters (5-10) split for the second straight day.

One day after throwing a three-hit shutout against North Dakota, Perkins (4-3) blanked the Mount on just four hits while walking none and striking out three.  She retired 10 in a row to start the game and did not allow a runner past second base.

The Hatters broke through against Mount St. Mary's starter Amanda Berkley in the bottom of the fifth.  Lizzie Shubert tripled home Kasey Fava for the first run of the inning, and then pinch-hitter Amanda Nikhazy drove a 1-0 pitch over the leftcenter field fence for her first career home run.

Later in the inning, freshman Maddie Marchiando delivered her first career hit in the form of an RBI single to score Elizabeth Jackson.  Ashly Smith capped the scoring with an RBI double as Stetson hit for the team cycle in the inning.

Perkins made the lead hold up, throwing just 69 pitches to record career win No. 40.

In the nightcap, Stetson jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Jackson walked, stole second, and scored on Danielle Diaz's single to left.

North Dakota (8-10) took a 2-1 lead in the top of the second, but the Hatters knotted the score in the bottom of the frame when Jackson singled home Lizzie Shubert.

The Hawks broke the 2-2 tie with a run in the fifth, then added three insurance runs in the top of the seventh.

The Hatters got one run back in the bottom of the seventh but would pull no closer. Molly McLaughlin had two hits to lead the offense.

Stetson will conclude play in the Hatter Classic at Noon on Sunday against Mount St. Mary's.
