Hatters Rally to Win ASUN Opener

Stetson men's tennis rallied for a 4-3 win over NJIT in the ASUN Conference opener for both teams, Saturday at Naimoli Center in Newark, N.J.

"A win is definitely how we wanted to start off our conference campaign and I commend the guys for pulling through adversity," Stetson head coach Christophe Noblet said. "A 4-3 win is never easy, especially when we had Coilin and Christian go on after matches had been completed as NJIT only has 4 courts."

As with any win there can always be aspects to be improved in terms of individual performances but I'm happy to start off with a win.

The Hatters (9-7 overall, 1-0 ASUN) opened the day with a thrilling win in doubles. NJIT began doubles play with a 7-5 win on Court 3, but the Hatters stormed back as Antoine Sanchez & Colter DeCoste grabbed a 7-5 win on Court 2, and Josh Laka & Tim Gennes outlasted their opponents on Court 1 for a 7-6 victory.

Up 1-0 on the scoreboard, the Hatters quickly fell behind once play turned to singles. The Highlanders won singles matches on Courts 3 and 4, but the Hatters tied the match as Louis Gorregues pulled out a 7-6, 6-4 win on Court 1.

NJIT regained the lead with a win on Court 2, before the Hatters finished strong. Christian Mills evened the team scored with a 6-2, 7-6 victory on Court 6, and senior Coilin MacNamara gave Stetson the overall win with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 triumph on Court 5.

The Hatters continue ASUN play when they visit North Florida on Saturday, March 23 in Jacksonville.
