Hatters Split with Jacksonville in ASUN Opener

Holli Jones hits a two-run double in Game 2

Jacksonville, Fla. -- Lizzie Shubert hit a three-run home run and Jaime Tino went the distance in the circle as Stetson defeated Jacksonville 9-3 in game 2 of an ASUN doubleheader Saturday afternoon at the Pruitt Softball Complex.

Molly McLaughlin and Holli Jones each added two-run doubles as the Hatters (10-17, 1-1 ASUN) earned a split on the day.  The Dolphins (13-17, 1-1) won the opener 3-2 in eight innings.

"I was pleased to see us come back and play well in the second game," Stetson head coach Frank Griffin said.  "I felt like we had the first game won and gave it away, but I was real proud of them for bouncing back.  I thought we got good pitching, good defense, and we scored some runs.  We need to come back here tomorrow and win another one."

Tino (2-10) went the distance in game 2 to record her second win of the season.  She allowed three runs on nine hits over seven innings, striking out two.

The Hatters backed Tino with a nine-run, 10-hit performance at the plate.  Elizabeth Jackson, Ashly Smith and McLaughlin collected two hits apiece.  Jones drove in two runs with a double in the third inning, McLaughlin plated two more with a double in the fifth, and Shubert followed with a three-run blast to left for her third home run of the season.

In game 1, Stetson was in control through the first six innings and carried a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh.  The Dolphins scored two unearned runs to force extra innings, and Nydia Perez singled home the winning run in the bottom of the eighth.

Perkins (8-6) allowed one earned run over 7.1 innings.  She walked one and struck out two.  Smith and Shubert each drove in runs.

The Hatters will go for the series win at 1 p.m. Sunday.  The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
