Hatters Unable to Keep Pace With Michigan

Lubbock, Texas – If the Stetson Hatters showed up and Rip Griffin Park on Saturday afternoon thinking they would be able to take advantage of a Michigan team that had just been swept in three games by Texas Tech, the Wolverines had other ideas.

Michigan (15-7) scored multiple runs in five of the first six innings against the Hatters and coasted to a 16-6 victory.

Stetson (8-13) got off to a good start against the Wolverines, with a double from freshman Mark Townsend in the first, followed by Eric Foggo getting hit by a Benjamin Keizer pitch. Freshman E.J. Doskow drove both runners home with a triple to center for a 2-0 Stetson lead.

That lead lasted just three batters in the bottom of the inning. Jesse Franklin reached on a one-out single off Hatters starter Robbie Peto (0-4) and Jordan Brewer followed with a two-run homer to knot the score. It was the first of three home runs in the game for the Wolverines.

Michigan added two more runs in the second inning, getting a pair of singles to open the inning, followed by a throwing error on Peto on an errant pickoff throw to first. The second run scored on a ground out for a 4-2 Wolverines lead.

The Wolverines continued to swing the bat well in the third inning, picking up three more runs on three hits to chase Peto from the game. Blake Nelson had an RBI double for Michigan and, followed by a run-scoring ground ball and an RBI single by Ako Thomas.

The Hatters got two of those runs back in the fourth inning when freshman Noah Dickerson followed a Doskow walk with a two-run home run to right center. Kyle Ball followed with a hit, ending the day for Keizer. Reliever Isaiah Page  (2-0) came in to retire the next three Stetson hitters to end the inning.

Michigan came right back in the bottom of the inning, scoring four runs off junior Mitchell Senger to push the Wolverines' lead to 11-4.

Jorge Arenas doubled home Nick Cardieri, who walked, in the sixth to cut into the Wolverines' lead, but Michigan got that run right back in the bottom of the inning on an RBI triple by Jordan Nwogu. Jesse Frankling followed with a two-run homer to left, pushing the UM lead to 14-5.

Michigan continued its offensive onslaught in the sixth, scoring four more runs. An RBI triple was followed by back-to-back home runs to score the runs.

The Hatters got a single run in the seventh on a two-out double by Dickerson to score Doskow.

Page worked four total innings for Michigan to earn the win. He allowed two runs on four hits during his stint on the mound.

The Hatters finished with 11 hits, with the trio of freshmen – Dickerson, Townsend and Doskow – accounting for two each along with Arenas. Franklin and Brewer had three hits and three RBI each to lead Michigan, which finished with 18 hits in the game.

The Hatters will be back in action on Sunday afternoon against the 19th ranked Red Raiders (15-5). That game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start (ET). Freshman Daniel Paret (0-0, 5.79) will make the start on the mound for Stetson against Texas Tech freshman Mason Montgomery (2-0, 4.19).
