Florence, Ala. – The Stetson baseball team turned in its most complete and dominant performance of the season on Friday night in dismantling ASUN newcomer North Alabama 12-1 in the Hatters' 2019 league opener.
Sophomore left-hander
Chris Gonzalez (4-0) went the distance on the mound for Stetson (11-14, 1-0), allowing just one unearned run on six hits with no walks and eight strikeouts. He needed just 119 pitches to finish the first complete game outing of his baseball career.
The Hatters supported Gonzalez by scoring in each of the first five innings, tying their season-high with 12 runs. Senior
Jacob Koos posted his first four-hit game since last April 6 at Kennesaw State and he set a new career-high with four runs batted in. Sophomore
Kyle Ball chipped in with career-highs for hits (3) and runs scored (3).
Stetson got on the board early when Koos led off the game with a hit against UNA starter Chase Best (0-7). Koos moved up on a fly ball before
Baylen Sparks drew a walk. Both Hatters took off on the first pitch to
Austin Bogart, with Koos coming around to score on a throw into left field by UNA catcher Landon Langston.
Best only lasted one more pitch, grabbing for his arm after the delivery. He left the game after just 13 total pitches, leaving the UNA (4-20, 0-4) bullpen to carry the rest of the load.
The Lions sent six more hurlers to the mound in the game, but the Hatters scored on each of the first five, building an insurmountable lead.
Some of the big hits in the game for Stetson included:
- A two-run double by Koos off Garret Gillum in a three-run second.
- A leadoff double by Sparks in the fourth off Kaleb Barnes. Sparks moved up to third on a wild pitch and scored on a passed ball.
- RBI singles by Koos and freshman Mark Townsend off Austin Nicols in the fifth.
- A two-run pinch-hit double by Andrew MacNeil off Keegan Foge in the seventh.
Overall, the Hatters had 11 hits in the game and were aided by eight walks, two UNA errors, three wild pitches, two hit batters and a passed ball.

th straight over ASUN foes, counting the 2018 ASUN Championship tournament.
