Hatters Rally in Extras to Defeat Maryland

Ashly Smith hits a walk-off double

DeLand, Fla. -- Stetson scored four runs with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to rally for a 6-5 come-from-behind victory over Maryland Friday night at Patricia Wilson Field.

Elizabeth Jackson's two-out, two-run single tied the game at 5, and Ashly Smith's double to straight away center field brought home Riley Russell with the game-winning run.

The game moved into extra innings tied at 2.  Maryland plated three runs in the top of the eighth inning as Bailey Boyd's RBI triple gave the Terrapins (10-10) a 5-2 lead.

The Hatters (6-11) fought back in their half as Lizzie Shubert's one-out double put runners at second and third. After a pop out put Stetson down to its final out, Molly McLaughlin reached on a defensive error to keep the inning alive.

Russell then walked to load the bases, and on a 1-2 pitch, Jackson lined one into the leftcenter field gap to bring in Shubert and McLaughlin with the tying runs.  Smith then doubled home Russell to complete the comeback.

Jackson went 3-for-3 with two RBI to lead the offense.  Danielle Diaz was 2-for-3 with an RBI double.

Jaime Tino allowed just two runs in five innings while striking out three.  Tori Perkins (5-4) got the win in relief after pitching the final three innings.

The Stetson Invitational continues Saturday as the Hatters host Fairfield at 5 p.m. and UT Martin at 7 p.m.
