Hatters Blank UNA, Clinch ASUN Tournament Berth

Stetson women's tennis rolled to a 7-0 shutout of North Alabama, Thursday at Mandy Stoll Tennis Center.

Thursday's victory not only improved the Hatters to 12-7 overall and 3-3 in conference play, it also guarantees the Hatters a spot in next weekend's ASUN Tournament, which will be hosted April 18-20 in DeLand.

"The goal now is to move on and have a good result Saturday against Lipscomb and do what we can to gain a higher seed for next weekend," Stetson head coach Travis Sandlant said. "As far as today, the ability to sustain our game and keep our concentration level was a real plus. I want us to get wins on our terms instead of waiting for the other team to make mistakes and give us a win."

Stetson opened play by winning the doubles point. Vicky Geurinckx & Broke Milner were the first tandem to register a victory, taking a 6-2 decision on Court 2. Danel Ashirova & Lucie Renault followed with a 6-2 win on Court 1 to clinch the point.

The Hatters made quick work of the Lions (6-15, 1-5) in singles. Milner gave Stetson a 2-0 lead with a 6-1, 6-0 win on Court 3, and Renault followed with a 6-2, 6-2 victory on Court 2.

Senior Alexe Viaud clinched the match for the Hatters with a 6-3, 6-3 victory on Court 6.

Geurinckx was a straight set winner (6-2, 6-3) on Court 4, and Ashirova gutted out a 6-4, 6-4 win on Court 1. Danielle Peele closed out the day for Stetson with a 5-7, 6-1, 1-0 (10-0) win on Court 5.

The Hatters close out the regular season when they host Lipscomb, 10 a.m., Saturday. Alexe Viaud, Stetson's lone senior, will be honored in her final home match in a ceremony prior to the start of play.
