Paret, Arenas Collect ASUN Awards

Stetson University junior shortstop Jorge Arenas and freshman pitcher Daniel Paret were selected as the ASUN Player and co-Pitcher of the Week on Monday.

Paret shared Pitcher of the Week honors with Jacksonville freshman Nick Love.

For Arenas, it is the second time he has been ASUN Player of the Week in his career. He also collected the award on April 2, 2018. The Hatters co-captain earned the award this week for his efforts in helping Stetson to a series victory over NJIT.

In Friday's series opener, Arenas homered in the fifth inning to give Stetson a 2-1 lead. He came back with an RBI single in the seventh inning, tying the score at 3-3 in a game the Hatters won 4-3.

In the first game of Sunday's double-header, Arenas accounted for the only run of the game, a solo home run in the sixth inning in support of Paret.

Arenas hit safely in all four games last week, batting .412 (7-17) with three RBI. He has now hit safely in six straight games, batting .478 (11-23). Going back to March 6, the Miami native has hit safely in 17-of-20 games, batting .394 during that stretch.

Paret worked eight shutout innings and recorded 12 strikeouts in the Hatters' 1-0 win. It was the most in a game for a Stetson pitcher since Logan Gilbert posted 14 Ks against Oklahoma State in the 2018 NCAA Regional Tournament.

Paret joins with sophomore Chris Gonzalez, who was named ASUN Pitcher of the Week last week. He combined with senior Vlad Nunez to post the first shutout of the year for the Hatters. Stetson tied for the NCAA lead with nine shutout wins in 2018. Nunez threw just three pitches to record three outs in the ninth inning, earning his sixth save of the year.

The Hatters (14-17) are scheduled to be back in action at Melching Field on Tuesday night when they host Bethune-Cookman (13-20). The Wildcats took the first game between the teams, 3-2, two weeks ago on a walk-off home run in the ninth inning.

Stetson is scheduled to send freshman right-hander Bret Neilan (1-3) to the mound to start while the Wildcats are expected to counter with freshman left-hander Alec Mendez (0-2).

The game between the Hatters and Wildcats is scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. start.

Stetson will go back onto the road this weekend for the Hatters' first visit to Liberty. The games in Lynchburg, Va., are scheduled for 6 p.m. on Friday night, 4 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday. Like Tuesday's game against Bethune-Cookman, all three games of the Liberty series are scheduled for ESPN+.
