Hatters Finish Fourth at MAAC Championships

PENNSAUKEN TOWNSHIP, N.J. – Stetson women's rowing enjoyed one of the best days in program history as the Hatters finished fourth overall in the Metro Athletic Conference Championships, Sunday at Cooper River Park.

Both of Stetson's V8+ boats reached their respective Grand Finals, with the 1V8+ capturing a bronze medal, while the 2V8+ finished fifth. Stetson's fourth-place finish is the best since the Hatters joined the MAAC in 2013.

"Today was a historic day for Stetson Rowing," head coach Katie Thurstin said. "We set a high goals for ourselves this year, to get every boat into the grand finals, and after months of hard training the 1V8+ and 2V8+ ran excellent heats and they finished third and fifth in the grands."

Stetson's third boat – the V4+ -- failed to make the Grand Finals, but the Hatters still scored in the Petite Finals. Thurstin was thrilled with their competitiveness.

"Although the V4+ missed their goals they knew their work wasn't over when it came to the petite finals," she said. "Championship races are based off of team points so every boat is responsible for earning as many points as they can for their team. The four performed 15 seconds faster than their heat and really did their part to help the team."

Stetson's Channing Scott was voted first-team All-MAAC, while teammates Morgan Doak and Kaley Concannon earned second-team honors.

Marist College won the MAAC Women's Rowing Championship. Marist placed second in the I Fours, and won the II Eights and I Eights to take home the title with 53 points.

Finishing behind Marist in the championship standings was Jacksonville with 49 points. Drake took third, followed by Stetson in fourth, with 37 and 32 points respectively. Robert Morris finished in fifth place with 30 points and Canisius College took sixth with 22 points. Finishing in seventh place was Fairfield University with 21 points, followed by Manhattan College with 19. Rounding out the leaderboard was Sacred Heart University with seven points.

"I am proud of how everyone performed this year," Thurstin said. "It was a great season and this was a great way to end Stetson Rowing's 30th anniversary season. I hope our predecessors are proud. We wouldn't be here without them.  Many thanks to our athletes, coaches and staff for helping us succeed. I look forward to what these women will accomplish next year."
