Trio of Peto, Paret and Nunez Combine to No-Hit FSU

On an afternoon that started with Stetson honoring retiring Florida State baseball coach Mike Martin before his last game at Melching Field, it was a trio of Hatters hurlers that made Stetson's 1-0 victory over Florida State a game no-one will forget.

Sophomore Robbie Peto, freshman Daniel Paret and senior Vlad Nunez combined to throw the sixth no-hitter in Stetson baseball history. It was the first time a Florida State squad was no-hit since 1993.

The win for Stetson (21-26) was the Hatters' third straight victory overall. It was also the second consecutive home win over Martin and his Seminoles (31-18).

Peto (1-8), who has been the Hatters' hard-luck pitcher all year, went the first four innings and faced the minimum thanks to sophomore catcher Nick Cardieri, who threw out FSU junior Drew Mendoza trying to steal to end the first inning after Mendoza reached on a walk.

Peto, who's regularly scheduled start was rained out on Sunday, retired the next nine straight FSU hitters. He was lifted from the game after throwing 65 pitches with six strikeouts to his credit.

It was in the third inning that Stetson scored the only run of the game. After loading the bases with no one out in the second inning against FSU freshman starter Jack Anderson (0-1) but failing to score, the Hatters were able to push across their one run when junior Jorge Arenas singled up the middle to score Cardieri, who walked to start the inning and moved up on a double by Jacob Koos.

It was the 100th career RBI for Arenas.

Paret came on to pitch in the fifth inning and retired the first eight FSU hitters he faced before allowing a two-out walk in the seventh. He got a strikeout, his fourth, to end the inning.

FSU had its best scoring chance in the eighth inning when Paret hit Matheu Nelson and then walked J.C. Flowers to open the frame. That was when Nunez got the call to come in from the pen.

The Stetson closer handled a sacrifice bunt that moved both FSU runners into scoring position before getting a pop up to Arenas at short for the second out. He closed out the inning with a strikeout of Jonathan Foster to set the stage for the ninth.

Nunez retired the first two FSU hitters in the final inning on a fly ball to deep left and a strikeout. He issued a four-pitch walk to the dangerous Mendoza to bring Robby Martin to the plate. Nunez needed just three pitches to get the strikeout and earn his 10th save of the year.

After going 32 years between no-hitters, the Hatters have now posted them in consecutive seasons. Mitchell Senger pitched a complete game no-hitter against George Washington on February 25, 2018.

The Hatters will look to keep their hot streak going this weekend when they travel up Interstate 95 to face ASUN rival Jacksonville in a three-game ASUN series. Stetson is tied with UNF, just a half game in front of Jacksonville, in the in the league standings with just two weeks left in the regular season.

The series against JU will open on Friday night at 7 p.m. with the second game of the series set for the same time on Saturday. The series finale is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m.
