A pair of Stetson freshmen were recognized on Wednesday by Collegiate Baseball, the oldest college baseball publication, by being named to the 2019 Freshman All-America squad.
Â
Hatters pitchers
Daniel Paret and
Danny Garcia were both named to the squad. They are the 25
th and 26
th players in Stetson baseball history to earn Freshman All-America honors and are the first since
Brooks Wilson in 2015.
Â
Paret, who was a second team All-ASUN selection this year in addition to being the league's Freshman of the Year, finished his first season with a 5-4 record with a 3.61 ERA. He led the Hatters, working 94.2 innings this spring while breaking the Stetson freshman record by recording a team-leading 102 strikeouts.
Â
He is the 12
th player in Stetson history to have surpassed 100 strikeouts in a season. His 102 this year surpassed the Hatters' freshman mark of 98 set by Lenny DiNardo in 1999. Overall, Stetson pitchers have struck out more than 100 batters in a season a total of 16 times.
Â
Garcia led the Hatters with a 1.22 ERA during a freshman campaign that saw him appear in a team-high 28 games on the mound, all in relief. He posted a 5-1 record and had two saves while working a total of 59.0 innings. He held opposing hitters to a .190 average on the year, the best among Stetson pitchers with at least six innings of work.
Â
Like Paret, Garcia was named to the ASUN All-Freshman team for 2019. Garcia was also named to the All-Tournament team for the 2019 ASUN Championship.
Â
Paret is spending his summer as a member of the DeLand Suns in the Florida Collegiate League while Garcia is playing for the Bellingham (Wash.) Bells in the West Coast League.
Â
The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association will announce its Freshman All-America team on June 10.
