Upstate Downs Hatters

USC Upstate shutout Stetson, 2-0, in men's soccer on Sunday in Spartanburg, S.C.

The loss was the first of the season for the Hatters (3-3) in four games away from home. Upstate (1-3) won for the first time this year.

Upstate's Moss Lewis gave the Spartans a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute, and that score nearly held up for the remainder of the game.

The Spartans' Roberto Umana put the game away with a goal in the 89th minute, giving Upstate a 2-0 lead and all but clinching the win.

Stetson out-shot Upstate, 14-13, but the Hatters put just five of those shots on-goal. Upstate goalkeeper Felipe Baeza made five saves to preserve the shutout. Stetson goalie Lute Lillo-Portero made two saves.

The Hatters return to play when they host Georgia Southern, 7 p.m., Wednesday, at the Athletic Training Center in DeLand.
