Hatters Start Strong, Hold on Late

Calum Ferguson and William Suaut each scored their first goals of the season, Ian McCauley added two assists and Stetson held on for a 2-1 win over Georgia Southern, Wednesday at the Athletic Training Center.

The Hatters (4-3) won at home for the first time in three tries this season. Stetson turned in a dominating first-half performance and appeared well on the way to an easy win until the Eagles (3-2) came alive late in the game to make it interesting.

Ferguson, a freshman, gave the Hatters a 1-0 lead in the 34th minute when he gathered a long throw-in from McCauley and scored from about 12 yards out.

Suaut made it a 2-0 game less than four minutes later. Freshman Brendan Clark sent a corner kick into the box, McCauley flicked a pass to Suaut who made an open shot as the Hatters gained a two-goal advantage.

Stetson went into halftime with an 11-5 advantage in shots, including seven shots on-goal. They continued to pepper the goal throughout the second half but couldn't score, leaving the door open for the Eagles to get back in it.

In the 87th minute the Eagles finally found the back of the net when Cody Prentiss scored off a free kick from Corey Irvine. The Eagles got a few more looks down the stretch but the Hatters held on.

The Hatters next host NJIT in the ASUN Conference opener for both teams, 7 p.m., Saturday.
