Hatters Score Late, Open ASUN Play with 1-0 Win

Stetson's William Suaut scored the game's only goal but it was a total team effort which led to the Hatters claiming a 1-0 win over NJIT in the ASUN Conference opener for both teams, Saturday at the Athletic Training Center in DeLand.

The Hatters (5-3, 1-0 ASUN) dominated play for the second straight game, out-shooting NJIT by a 20-5 count. The Highlanders (2-2-3), who entered the game ranked No. 3 in the Atlantic Region, mustered just one real offensive chance.

With the game scoreless in late in the first half, NJIT's Regsan Watkins was fouled in the box and awarded a penalty kick. But Stetson goalkeeper Lute Lillo-Portero made the save, keeping the game scoreless as play moved into the second half.

After multiple near-misses, the Hatters finally broke through in the 77th minute. Finn Busmann's corner kick was played perfectly to Gabriel Diniz, whose shot was stopped by the NJIT keeper. But Suaut was there to clean up the mess for his second goal of the season and a 1-0 Stetson lead.

From there, the Hatters were able to run out the clock and secure the win.

Stetson kept the ASUN's top offensive team off the scoreboard for the first time all season. Lillo-Portero made four saves on the way to his third shutout of the year.

The Hatters next visit FIU, 7 p.m., Tuesday.
