Hatters Draw with ERAU

Kate Carter scored a pair of goals for Stetson but Embry-Riddle scored the equalizer with less than 90 seconds left in regulation as the Hatters and Eagles settled for a 2-2 draw, Thursday at the Athletic Training Center in DeLand.

The Hatters dominated the game despite the final result. Stetson (2-5-1) out-shot ERAU, 29-11, with 13 shots on-goal. But in the end, it wasn't quite enough as stellar goalkeeping by both teams kept it a tie game.

"That's soccer," Stetson head coach Chris Bergmann said. "I think statistically, we dominated the game. We had fantastic opportunities, but their keepers came up big. When you have opportunities, soccer is about finishing them and we're still learning how to finish."

Embry-Riddle opened the scoring as Marie Seim knocked in a penalty kick in the 6th minute.

Stetson knotted the game at 1-1 when Carter made her own penalty kick, this one coming just over four minutes later.

The game remained tied at halftime despite a furious attack from the Hatters in the first half. Stetson pounded the ERAU goal for 12 total shots in the first 45 minutes as Eagles' goalkeeper Dana Ruchti made seven saves.

Carter and the Hatters finally broke through in the 55th minute for their second goal. Carter headed in a perfect corner kick from Jordan Schaefer for a 2-1 lead.

That goal was nearly enough for the Hatters as they appeared on their way to their third win of the season. But in the 89th minute, Embry-Riddle's Ragnheidur Gardarsdottir broke free near midfield and chipped a slow roller just past a charging Lara Bates in front of the Stetson goal and into the left corner to tie it up.

In overtime, both teams had several chances but Stetson's Bates and the ERAU goalkeeper tandem of Ruchti and Fanny Kristiansson were up to the task with a series of outstanding saves.

"I thought we had some great set pieces and, like I said, we dominated different parts of the game, which was really fun to see," Bergmann said. "This game helped in building who we are, but you always want to walk out as the victors, especially when the offensive statistics are overwhelmingly in your favor."

The Hatters play their final non-conference game of the season on Sunday when they host Illinois State. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m.
